Learning About The Importance Of Cholesterol

The waxy substance in our bodies called cholesterol comes primarily in two basic types, HDL and LDL. HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, is typically referred to as good cholesterol, while LDL, or low density lipoprotein, is the unwanted form of cholesterol.

LDL generally transports cholesterol from the liver throughout the body and, if too much is circulating in a person's blood, it will eventually form patches on the inner surfaces of the arteries which supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque in the body, a thick, solid lesion that can clog the arterial passageways; this is the disease which is known as atherosclerosis.

Then, there is HDL, which is designated as the good form of cholesterol, since higher levels of it seem to be protective against heart attacks in people. It is believed that HDL returns cholesterol to the liver, enabling it to be processed for disposal from the body. As a result, a low level of HDL in a person's body may inhibit this removal process and raise the chances of suffering from a heart attack.

There is also another element which should be discussed is the formation of triglycerides, which are a type of fat that is manufactured in the body and also found in food. Have you ever wondered how too much potato turned into fat? Well, in part, you can credit triglycerides for that. The reason that it is mentioned with cholesterol is because those with high triglyceride levels are more likely to have high cholesterol, a high LDL cholesterol, a less than healthy HDL cholesterol level and are therefore at a higher risk for heart disease.

Simply expecting that a high cholesterol cure will be available in a pill bottle is not a rational strategy for improved health. Medication can be of great value if all else fails, but it should be saved for a real emergency.

You Should Avert From High Cholesterol Food-Stuffs To Stay Healthy
The best way to get at that overabundance of cholesterol is, of course, to take a look at your high cholesterol food consumption and alter it to reduce the amount of that food in your diet.

The Cholesterol Cardiovascular Disease Connection
There is no clear scientifically proven explanation as to exactly how a diet high in saturated fat can be the cause of rising cholesterol in the blood.

Vital Things To Consider Regarding High Cholesterol
High cholesterol is something which does not cause many symptoms, which means that you could have it and not know about it. This is why it is so important to schedule any recommended checkups as suggested for your age or other risk factors.

Cholesterol Awareness. Discover Your Risks For Cardiovascular Disease
Cholesterol awareness has become a very popular topic over the past 10 years or so. It seems that once we reach age 40, we are all tracking our cholesterol numbers as close as we watch our waist lines. Unfortunately both seem to increase after 40.
